It’s Like Magic…

But is it really?  What is magic and how do you define it?  Is it something you ‘believe’ in?  To me there are many magical things in the world.  Mostly I define these things by the awe they inspire in me.  Extraordinary things that I maybe don’t understand.  Things like, how our hearts beat.  Sure, I know how they mechanically beat and the physiological process, but really… think about it.  What makes a heart beat?  Furthermore, did you know lovers hearts beat in sync at night?  This is magical, truly.  Then there is nature… take a look around you, look up at the sky, at the clouds floating past, the birds in the air and all the life buzzing around you vibrant with energy and color and sound.  Look at the stars.  Our world, our universe and how we are all living together, flowing in and out of the rhythms of life.  These things are amazing, extraordinary and magical.

So what about Acupuncture?  Well, to some it feels like magic, and to others, without the science, it’s just nonsense.  So then, what is magic?  Magic is merely unexplained science.   It is those things we have not yet discovered or are not yet able to understand.  This Ted Talk, is not necessarily about Acupuncture but it relates to it in a powerful way.  It is “equal parts science and magic”.  We are all a part of the universe, we are essentially made up of star-dust, which means we are all innately connected.  (Have you seen this article: Scientists Discover Children’s Cells Living in Mothers’ Brains).  We share this deep connection with one another, with our environment and with all of nature.  We move in concert with one another, we change with the seasons and with our surroundings as do our internal bodies.

The Chinese were ahead of their time in observing us interact in our environment.  They built an entire medicine on the basis that we, like nature, change as the seasons do, as the landscape does and act as a one.  We really are extraordinary beings in an extraordinary place and this reality truly is “equal parts science and magic”.

Until next time ~ appreciate the magic around you (& come get some Acupuncture)!

Year of the Snake

Photo by Simson Petrol on Unsplash

Well, I’m a bit behind, but February 10th, marked the beginning of the Year of the Water Snake.  So what should we expect & what does all this astrological information mean?

Last year was the Year of the Dragon; it was a very auspicious, ambitious and enthusiastic year.  This year, we will be slithering into one much more cautious, subtle & sly.

The Chinese Zodiac:

The Chinese Zodiac is represented by 12 different animals.  The Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.  Sound familiar? These 12 animals symbolize a cycle of time, including the cycle of the day and years.  Each animal is represented by a 2 hour window within the day as well as once every 12 years. This year, the Snake is our representative; so, the year, and those born within it, will embody the characteristics of one. In addition each animals’ yearly cycle will embody one of the elements as well.  The elements of Water (this year), Wood, Fire, Metal & Earth, will change the characteristics of the animal slightly.  Water is a Yin element which both slows things down and brings things inward.

Born in the Year of the Snake:

Those born during the Year of the Snake will express traits such as intelligence, gracefulness and materialism.  They are extremely analytical and as a result will not jump into situations carelessly. They tend to get what they want, and are quite versed at scheming and plotting in order to get it.  In addition, those born in the year of the snake are also enigmatic, introspective, intuitive and refined. Other Snake years include; 2001, 1989, 1977, 1965 etc.

What’s to Come:

So what does this mean for all of us this year?  Some of the key points I found are mostly in the finance department.  Both individually and collectively, finances will be lucky this year.  There will be success in business due to the clever and cunning skills of the snake.  This year will also bring unexpected changes, instability and changeability.  For this, we need to embody the thought-fullness and planning characteristics of the snake without acting too quickly, and with this will come success.  We will need to pay attention to detail, research and investigation.  Headway will be made this year, be it in a slow and methodical way.

And now, for my favorite quote about this New Year…

“A new-found ambition to greatness will inspire you to be all you can be, and provide you with the follow through to actually achieve your goals” (“The 2013 year,” ).

So with that… be sure to think before you speak, consider before you act, and plan meticulously this year!

Happy Chinese New Year, may it be prosperous and lucky!

Until next time ~ Be well…

Understanding Acupuncture

I know it’s been ages since I’ve written a blog post, so what’s the word?  Well, it seems Acupuncture is making headway in the news and changing the way we perceive healthcare and the idea of wellness.  It (Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine) is unfortunately always a controversial topic… does Acupuncture really work or is it just a placebo?!  I like to answer this question by secretly thinking in my head (“you’re right… it’s probably placebo, I just spent the last 3 full years of my life mounting a huge debt and committing my every thought and effort to a medicine I plan to also commit the rest of my life to and it doesn’t really work”)… but in reality, I get it.  I, myself am a left brain thinker… I like to know how things work.  It settles me to know what the exact mechanisms of action are, why and exactly how can we fix things.

Acupuncture, when explained the right way, can be understood as well.  It’s just a different language, a different way of looking at our bodies, one we were never taught.  In the past, we’ve been taught to hand our health over to a white coat and that our bodies work in individual pieces. Our heart pumps blood, our lungs breathe air and our livers detox… which is exactly right, but that’s only the beginning.  What happens when there is a problem with one of these, well, we see a specialist and fix the part (which is not entirely wrong).  I’m not here to say western medicine doesn’t have a place in wellness and healthcare, it most certainly does.  It is necessary and amazing how far we’ve come as far as the understanding of the human body not to mention medical advances over the years.  However this version of healthcare is still lacking in that we don’t recognize the whole body as a coordinated machine. One that can not function correctly and efficiently if one piece of the puzzle is out of whack. If the liver can’t detox, well, then the blood is toxic.  If the blood is toxic then I’m pretty sure the blood disperses oxygen and all its contents to the rest of the body right?  Well, you can bet those toxins are going to end up elsewhere, so your body comes up with another way to discard the toxic waste creating an imbalance.  In this case, it comes out through your lungs and skin (a nasty rash).  So, the point…  when you go in for this skin rash and you get a topical steroid cream to calm it down, yes, it will more often than not make the rash go away.  But, do you think it fixed the actual problem… you may want to think again.

Think of your body as a garden… if the soil is toxic, your garden probably won’t flourish.  On this same note, if your soil doesn’t have the proper nutrients (minerals/vitamins), enough water or get enough sunlight then nothing will grow, and if it does, it won’t grow well.  Your body works the same way.

So the point of my long-winded argument to support Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine is this; treat your body with care, your whole body… each physical, emotional and spiritual part.  Without care, nourishment and proper attention to our whole bodies, we can’t flourish and disease will most certainly ensue.

Acupuncture is an amazing tool and treatment modality when used with other treatments as well as on its own.  Using herbs in the form of individualized Chinese herbal formulas along with Acupuncture enhances its effectiveness.  This most recent study (a meta-analysis) looks at a number of studies over a number of years, specifically addressing chronic pain, migraines, and arthritis.  It is gaining positive attention in the mainstream media, which you can find here on the New York Times Wellness Blog:  Acupuncture Provides True Pain Relief in Study.  While it’s not the first study to say so, it is one of the most rigorous and thorough studies to date.

“The researchers, who published their results in Archives of Internal Medicine, found that acupuncture outperformed sham treatments and standard care when used by people suffering from osteoarthritis, migraines and chronic back, neck and shoulder pain” (O’Connor, A. 2012).

Those of us who are already, dare I say, “believers of Acupuncture” don’t need a study to tell us that it works.  Nonetheless, I will take all the good promotion Acupuncture can get; because wouldn’t it be wonderful if it was part of standard care and covered by your insurance?!  Education and knowledge is power and if we don’t spread the word, then no one will know the benefits & possibilities of such a wonderful medicine without all the black box warnings.

Till next time…

~be well~

Human Test Subjects

Genetically Modified Organism (GMO’s) is a common term we hear these days.  They (and by they I’m mostly talking about Monsanto) are beginning to take over our natural food sources by chemically as well as genetically altering them beyond their organic recognition.  Not only is this genetic mutation trend isolated to our food, but it is leaching into many other products as well.  After all, corn; one of the biggest victims of genetic mutations is a base for many things you probably aren’t even aware of.  A short list includes; meat products, baby food, adhesives, chalk, laundry starch, placebo’s, toothpaste, medicines, talcum powder…

It’s a huge controversy.  Here we have the FDA, (a government agency, largely motivated and funded by Monsanto) telling us these chemicals and genetic mutations are completely safe for ingestion and do not affect the biochemistry of one’s physiology, but as there was a rise in GM foods, there is a near perfect correlation of an increase in allergies (food, environmental), asthma and eczema.  In addition, this same government agency is telling us that they refuse to label food products as GMO if they in fact are even though they claim they are safe, what’s to hide FDA?  (Seems like a human rights violation to me).  Maybe they don’t want us to be able to track the negative impact of these foods on our health… just a thought.  Needles to say, the food industry is an interesting machine.  In essence we are the guinea pigs of food and nutrition science, we are the un-consenting test subjects of a large research study that is, at this moment, testing the effects of what long-term ingestion of chemicals and altered nutrition will eventually do to the human body.

So, what to do?!  Well, for starters it’s always good to do your research.  Know where your food comes from.  Make sure it’s organic (most of the time).  Farmer’s markets and growing your own fruits and veggies if possible is always the best way to go.  If you are a meat eater, know your farmer/rancher, or hunt and process it yourself.

And… since pictures and Infographics are always nice… here is one for you to start with:

Coming Soon to the Land of the Sun!

… Jill Bolte Taylor.

This is sure to be one of the best presentations you’ve ever seen and well worth the $45 dollars to listen, watch and change how you perceive life and our relationships forever.  I have read her book & watched her video (more than just once)… and if you catch me in the mood I can go on and on about her story.  Not only did she experience something extremely life-threatening (a hemorrhagic stroke), but she lived through it, regained her physical and mental capabilities (somewhat of a miracle)… and to top if off, she was and is a world re-known neuroanatomist.  So… who better to understand exactly everything that she was going through!  It’s almost as if all the circumstances were a perfect storm for her to tell her story.

She tells an amazing story of courage, persistence and sheer will to recover from and conquer all the odds while at the same time reflecting on the subtleties of  a complete “right brain” experience.  Coming from a purely scientific background she paints a beautiful picture of how it is to live truly in the present, to feel the subtle energies and emotions of those around us and to be one with the universe.

Check out her TED talk here:

See you there!  She is speaking in Sun Valley on Friday, May 25th, from 6:00-7:30.  Tickets for the Sun Valley Wellness Festival are available on their website here:  15th Annual SV Wellness Festival

Be well ~

Erin
