Back To School Means More Swine Flu Scare!

Source: Wikimedia Commons

With the start of school just around the corner, I’ve been reading, and hearing about the Swine Flu on just about every media outlet there is.  There is a lot of information out there and if you are un-informed then it does start to sound pretty scary.  Your health is important, just about the most important thing there is, and you should be knowledgeable about the decisions you make regarding it.  Dr. Mercola has posted another great article on the Swine Flu and specifically regarding kids going back to school and vaccines.  Make sure you get all the information before you make any rash decisions, it’s yours and your childs health and it shouldn’t be taken lightly!  Don’t be afraid to discuss these things with your doctor!

It’s official, I Twitter

So, I have been wanting to do this for a while, and finally since I apparently have a lot of time on my hands this summer, have signed up for Twitter.  I’m pretty excited about it actually, I’m going to use it as more of a quick facts and fun information regarding health and wellness.  It will be a good way for me to share all those neat little facts that I hear around school and in the alternative/natural health care world I’m living in right now, without feeling the pressure to put together a more organized & involved blog post.  Please check me out!

Fun with Acupressure!

Well, it turns out I am learning… and good thing too!  It’s nice to realize that all those hundreds of hours I’ve spent sitting on my butt, taking notes until my hands cramp and racking up the student loans that I’ll be paying off until the end of time are actually worth it!

I know it’s been a while since my last post, but thankfully I’m still getting lots of hits on my blog and hopefully continuing to spread all the good news about acupuncture and it’s amazing benefits.  It’s been such a great Summer, (my favorite time of year) and I’ve been busy busy busy getting outdoors as much as I can, while I have the time.

So, the point on this blog post is to share some useful information with all of you.  Most of my time in the past year at school has been spent in the classroom with not a lot of actual hands on time, however, all that is changing.  Last quarter we started to work in the clinic and this summer we get to work in a clinic off campus. Some of the things we get to do arebodywork, cupping and moxa.  It’s been really inspiring to put all that memorization and knowledge into practice and I find myself really starting to know what I’m talking about now!

Anyway, again, getting back to the point, I just recently spent some time with my friends who live in Corvallis and we ended up going to the river (The Willamette) to do some inter-tubing and just plain relaxing in the summer sun.  On the way there, we had to cross the river on a Ferry (which was sort of fun, since it was my first trip on a Ferry), but, my friend Maggie, who gets really sea sick, instantly ran to the edge and was literally gagging off the side.  Quick thinking on my part, I grabbed her wrist and put pressure on an acupuncture point on her forearm.  Literally, within seconds, I watched the nausea dissipate and the color come back to her face!  Great stuff right?  You may be familiar with this point, it’s about 3 finger breadths from the wrist crease on the inside of the forearm, just between the two tendons [if you don’t have a palmaris longus (both tendons); as some don’t then it’s just towards the radial side (thumb side) of the central tendon running up your forearm].  It lies on the Pericardium Channel, Pc 6, as is called Nei Guan, “Inner Gate”  Try it the next time you feel nauseous, and see what you think… I’ve done it on myself before, but it was truly fun to watch the point in action.  This point is also good for insomnia, palpitations,  headache, cough, asthma  and digestion issues just to name a few.

So there you have it, my fun fact of the day… until next time, be well!

As they say, shift happens…

Yin Tang - hmfultonmd

Yin Tang - hmfultonmdRecently posted on USNews.com; we are on the verge of Healthcare reform and change may be seen as soon as summer’s end!  7 Ways Health Reform Is Going to Affect You talks about… you guessed it, the logistics of Obama’s Healthcare reform and there at number 7:

7) You might find your doctor prescribing acupuncture for your back pain and a trip abroad for your surgery. Complementary and alternative medicine, often dismissed by mainstream medicine, will be encouraged by your health plan as a low-cost substitute for standard care. As President Obama said a few weeks ago when asked about acupuncture for chronic pain, if there’s evidence it works, support it. The British national health system has just approved acupuncture as part of standard care for aching backs. Other forms of alternative medicine are sure to follow.

Acupuncture and other Alternative forms of Medicine are quickly gaining ground and establishing a presence in healthcare in the US.  As a student of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine I have been seeing a wonderfully helpful side of healthcare that I think we all wish for!  Well, it’s here folks… the shift is happening and hopefully in the future (hopefully sooner than later) it will be more available through insurance companies for us to use!

‘Obama Positive Toward Acupuncture’

Talk about great advertising and a great boost for our medicine!  This article featuring an interview with President Obama was just posted on Acupuncture Today!

“During a recent Q&A session of a Presidential Town Hall meeting in St. Louis, one licensed acupuncturist and massage therapist in Florissant, Mo., got to ask President Barack Obama what must certainly be one of the most important questions in the minds of all alternative health practitioners.

Below is a transcript of the question and President Obama’s answer, which does appear to be positive toward the inclusion of alternative therapies into health care reform.

Q: I’m a licensed acupuncturist and licensed massage therapist in Florissant. And so…

President Obama: I could use one right now. (Laughter.) My back is stiff. I’ve been working hard.

Q: I’ll be happy to help you. (Laughter.) And this kind of fits into what you were just talking about as far as health care. I’m wondering, as a practitioner of Oriental medicine, knowing that the National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization have discovered through their studies that alternative medicine often is more cost-effective and very effective, how will alternative medicine fit in your new health care program?

President Obama: Well, look, my attitude is that we should – we should do what works. So I think it is pretty well documented through scientific studies that acupuncture, for example, can be very helpful in relieving certain things like migraines and other ailments — or are at least as effective as more intrusive interventions.

I will let the science guide me. We just swore in an outstanding new Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, former governor of Kansas. (Applause.) It’s good to see that a Jayhawk got applause on this side of the border here. (Laughter.) But she’s going to do an outstanding job. And my charge to her is, as we’re going through health care reform, let’s find out what works.

I think one basic principle that we know is that the more we do on the prevention side, the more we can obtain serious savings down the road. So giving children early checkups, making sure that they get immunized, making sure that they are diagnosed if they’ve got eyesight problems, making sure that they’re taught proper nutrition to avoid a life of obesity – those are all issues that we have some control over. And if we’re making those investments, we will save huge amounts of money in the long-term.

Unfortunately, the hardest thing to do in politics – and certainly in health care reform – has been to get policymakers to make investments early that will have long-term payoffs. Because people – their attitude is, well, I’ll be out of office by the time that kid grows up; and the fact that they’re healthy, that doesn’t help me. And in the private-sector insurance system, oftentimes insurers make the same calculation. Their attitude is, well, people change jobs enough for us to pay for the preventive medicine now when the problem may not crop up for another 20 years and they’ll be long out of our system, so we don’t want to reimburse it because it will make things more costly. That’s the logic of our health care system that we’re going to have to change.

The recovery package put a huge amount in prevention. We are, in our budget, calling for significant increases in prevention. And my hope is that, working in a bipartisan fashion, we are going to be able to get a health care reform bill on my desk before the end of the year that will start seeing the kinds of investments that will make everybody healthier.”
