A Change in the Seasons…

Photo by Jeremy Bishop on Unsplash

As I went into town yesterday, my usual route to my favorite coffee shop was interrupted by a completely flooded street.  The rain was blustering from just about every direction and coming down in sheets & there’s sure to be snow coming down in the mountains.  Typical Portland weather you say?  Or just the commencement of Li Dong; the Winter season.  Not surprisingly, yesterday did in fact mark the first day of the Winter Season according to the Chinese Calendar; known as Li Dong in Pinyin.  Pretty soon the snow will start accumulating and we will be in the full swing of Winter.

The Winter months, according to the Chinese Five Element system, Wu Xing, correlate to the Water element.  The energy of Water relates to darkness, cold, stillness and conservation.  It is said to govern the Kidneys, the ears and the bones &  is representative of intelligence, wisdom, flexibility, softness and pliancy.  If one were to imagine the stillness of the ocean or the pliancy of a river or stream, one can comprehend the natural tendencies of the Water element in a healthy state.   Following the nature of the seasons, implies we conserve our energy during the Winter months for the coming of the Yang seasons; Spring and Summer.

“Water ascends to fullness in the frost of winter as plants  submerge their energy into their roots, animals thicken their hides, and ponds harden into ice.  Movement slackens as matter and energy concentrate.  This is a time of apparent quiescence and stasis, yet beneath the surface is the hidden activity of gestation and germination that will bring forth renewal in spring… During this period of hibernation the essence of life persists in its most primitive state… [water] is the source of our inherited intelligence”.

So take advantage of these shorter days, get some much needed rest and enjoy the changing of the seasons as the snow begins to accumulate and the temperatures fall.  I always get excited when the weather starts to change as it’s an excuse to cozy up in my warm clothes, cuddle up next to a fire (or a space heater) with a cup of hot tea & it always reminds me that the holidays are right around the corner complete with home-baked pies and good times with family and friends.

Happy Acupunture Day & International Day of Climate Action!

It’s true folks, October 24th marks the 7th annual Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Day Oct. 24th!  In 2002, National Acupuncture Day was enstated to promote the positive benefits of Acupuncture and other Oriental Medical modalities to the public and get the word out.  This year, hopes to be the biggest and best ever, with events set up all over the country.  Organizations are setting up lectures & group events, private practices are giving great deals and even some free treatments!  Acupuncture seems to be gaining more recognition in the media and the healthcare systems these days and more and more people are using AOM (Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine) as a means of preventative and general healthcare.  If you are interested in learning more about AOM, I’ve included a couple of links to find an event near you.

Of course these links are not fully inclusive, if you don’t see an event in your neck of the woods feel free to ask your own acupuncturist if he/she has anything set up for the day or even the week!

If you have never had acupuncture and have any questions about it, make today your day to learn something new, or stop in for a treatment.  It’s really an amazing medicine and I’ve enjoyed every minute of my education thus far, I’m truly excited to continue learning and someday being able to really share my knowledge with my own clients, friends and family!  Ever since my first Acupuncture visit, I think I always knew I’d end up here, but it’s been quite the journey!  If you have a great story about Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, please share it!  I love hearing people’s stories, they are always so inspiring.  I know how important this medicine has been in my life and I hope that it becomes a part of yours too!

350In other news October 24th also marks International Day of Climate Action which means: people in 181 countries are coming together for the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet’s history. At over 4500 events around the world, people are gathering to call for strong action and bold leadership on the climate crisis.

Here is a copy of a letter issued by the organization 350.org to give you a little more information:

We are a group of people from around the planet—young and old, scientists and writers and activists—who have one thing in common. We know the most important number on earth: 350. And we know how to use that number to finally get global action on the worst crisis humans have ever faced. But we can only do it if you help.

A year ago, our greatest climatologist—NASA’s James Hansen—and his team produced a landmark series of studies. They showed that if we let the amount of carbon in the atmosphere top 350 parts per million, we can’t have a planet “similar to the one on which civilization developed and to which life on earth is adapted.”

The bad news is we’re already past that number—we’re at 390 parts per million, which is why the Arctic is melting, why drought is spreading across the planet, why people are already dying from diseases like dengue fever and malaria occurring in places where they’ve never been seen before.

The good news: that number gives us a target to aim for.
When the world’s leaders meet in Copenhagen in December to reach agreement on a new climate treaty, we need them to go farther than they’ve planned to go: we need to make sure they’ll pay attention to the latest science and put forward a plan that gets us back to safety.

So here’s the plan. On October 24, we need you to organize an action in the place where you live, something that will make that most important number visible to everyone. People in more than 1000 communities around the globe have already announced plans—they’ll be school children planting 350 trees in Bangledesh, scientists hanging banners saying 350 on the statues on Easter Island, 350 scuba divers diving underwater at the Great Barrier Reef, and a thousand more creative actions like these.  At each event, people will gather for a big group photo that somehow depicts 350–and upload that photo to the web 350.org.  As actions take place around the world, we’ll link all the pictures together electronically via the web–by the end of the day, we’ll have a powerful visual petition linking together the entire planet that we can deliver to the media and world leaders.

So far more than 100 nations are taking part—it’s shaping up to be to be the biggest day of grassroots action on global warming ever. But we need it to be much larger—we need you, in your village or town or city, to take part.  It’s not hard—we can help you with materials and ideas. But you need to take the first step, by registering an action and starting to let your friends and neighbors know about it.

Involve groups that you’re in—everything from your church, mosque or synagogue to your local bicycle group. People want to help, especially if they see the chance for something that might actually matter. This is even more important than changing your lightbulb—this is your chance to help change the way the whole world operates. October 24 comes six weeks before those crucial UN meetings in Copenhagen. It’s a great chance to take a stand—maybe the last great chance, given what the scientists tell us about the momentum of global warming.

But it can only happen with the help of a global movement—and it’s starting to bubble up everywhere. Farmers in Cameroon, students in China, even World Cup skiers have already helped spread the word about 350. Churches have rung their bells 350 times; Buddhist monks have formed a huge 350 with their bodies against the backdrop of Himalayas. 350 translates across every boundary of language and culture. It’s clear and direct, cutting through the static and laying down a firm scientific line.

This is like a final exam for human beings. Can we muster the courage, the commitment, and the creativity to set this earth on a steady course before it’s too late? October 24 will be the joyful, powerful day when we prove it’s possible.

If you want to take action please visit www.350.org and see if you can take part in some event or set up your own!  I know it’s late notice, BUT, in the off chance that you were looking for something to do on Saturday, you now have TWO great options and if not Oct. 24th, then at least I’ve put the idea in your head to think about it!

Till next time,

Be well!

Swine Flu Update

If you are like me, you are probably getting sick of hearing about the Swine Flu, but I feel pretty passionate about spreading any good information I hear & I am a big advocate of getting all the facts prior to injecting some unknown substance into my body just because somebody tells me I should.  Anyway, I read another great article on Dr. Mercola’s website about the Swine Flu (H1N1 virus) both presently and in the past and was inspired to at least share a few facts with you.  If you would like to read the full article, which I highly recommend, you can access it here:  ALERT: Special Swine Flu Update  There is a LOT of great information in this article, so please take the time to read the whole thing, you’ll be happy you did, and even if you don’t agree with the basic premise, it’s always good to hear both sides of the story!

Tips To A Healthy Flu Season

Flu season… yep, it’s here and on every corner there is a “Get your flu shot here” sign.  As far as vaccines go, well that’s a whole other discussion, but I thought I’d share some quick basics for preventing illness and making it through this season with your health intact.   On a side note, while I’m not going to get into the topic of the vaccine,  I think it’s important for us to be educated in the decisions we make regarding our health and this article does a good job of pointing out some interesting statistics about the flu vaccine:  Flu Vaccine Exposed

Here are some quick and easy ways you can boost your immunity and prevent the flu this season…EO

  • Wash your hands whenever you can or for convenience sake, I just started carrying a bottle of hand sanitizer around with me.  I recommend EO, it has a nice lavender scent so you don’t smell like alcohol all day!
  • Elderberry is anti-viral and you can take it in tincture or pill form.  There was even a study published recently on its effectiveness in treating the infamous H1N1 virus; otherwise known as The Swine Flu.  Check it out here: Elderberry Flavanoids bind to and prevent H1N1 infection in vitro
  • Vitamin C, D, A & Zinc all boost the immune system
  • Antioxidants; don’t forget to eat your colorful fruits and veggies
  • Echinacea; I just got some yummy Immune boosting tea w/ Echinacea, Lemon & Ginger
  • Limit sugar
  • Don’t stress; nows a perfect time to get started on your Qi-gong practice if you don’t already have one!  There are lots of ways to limit stress, yoga, meditation, walking outdoors, & other forms of exercise just to name a few, for more info check out one of my previous posts Here
  • Get plenty of sleep; sleep is so important!
  • Drink lots of water and get lots of fluids to help flush out the body and keep hydrated
  • Limit dairy, as in Chinese Medicine, it creates a lot of phlegm, which creates a nice breeding ground for sickness.
  • Eat lots of garlic & ginger
  • YinQiaoSanAlso some good Chinese Formulas if you are starting to feel the beginning’s of a flu coming on:  Yin Qiao San, Gan Mao Ling or ‘Perilla Pearls’ (for more information on, the pearls click here to link)  **Of course, please consult your Acupuncturist when choosing the right formula!

So there you go, some quick bits of knowledge you can live by this flu season!  Here’s to a healthy season!  Take care!

Here is another great article on Boosting the Immune System using Chinese Medicine and another great Integrative Medicine Source with info from Naturopaths and Licensed Acupuncturists.

Living Organically

fn6_usdaorganicsealI just read an article that Dr. Mercola posted on his latest newsletter, “Which Organic Label Should You Trust”, and it reminded me that I’ve been meaning to post something about organic foods for a while now.  I don’t claim to be an expert on the topic but it definitely deserves attention.  Our health is greatly influenced by the foods that we put into our body, it is literally, the fuel that drives us.  So what’s the big deal, why are organic foods so much better for us?

Organic implies that the foods are free of chemicals, pesticides, & hormone additives that can be found in other foods.  These additives change the chemical constituents of the food itself, deeming them less bioavailable, more toxic to the body and they have been linked to many different diseases, such as cancer and other autoimmune disease.

Obviously, organic foods are a much healthier choice, and just to prove this point, in October 2002 there was a study published in Environmental Health Perspectives where University of Washington researchers compared pesitcide residues in children aged 2 to 5 years old.  The children who consumed mostly organic foods over a three-day period had dramatically lower levels of compounds produced by the metabolism of organophosphate  insecticides (commonly used on fruits and vegetables) in their urine than children eating a conventional diet.  In fact, the children eating a conventional diet averaged almost nine times the amount of pesticides as children eating organic foods!

So, how do you know what you’re getting?  Not all Organic foods are created equal, you always have to check the label & read the ingredients!

According to the USDA foods that are labeled as:

  •  100% Organic are in fact 100% Organic.  They must contain ONLY organically produced ingredients & processing aids.
  • Organic foods must be at least 95% organically produced ingredients.
  • Made with Organic Ingredients are foods that contain at least 70% organic ingredients

Only foods that contain 95% to 100% organic ingredients can label their products with the USDA Seal, so it’s a good thing to keep in mind!  Also, all ingredients that are organic must be labeled as such in the ingredients.

Buying Organic gets expensive, I know, I’m definitely on a tight budget and try to limit my grocey bills the best I can so it’s always good to know when it’s the MOST necessary to buy organic and when you can get away with not.

Here is a quick list I took from Mercola.com of “ok” conventional foods:

  • Brocolli
  • Eggplant
  • Cabbage
  • Banana
  • Kiwi
  • Asparagus
  • Sweet Pea
  • Mango
  • Pineapple
  • Sweet Corn (but you always have to be careful with GMO’s)
  • Avocado
  • Onion

Here are some foods, you should ALWAYS buy Organic:

  • Peaches
  • Apples
  • Sweet Bell Peppers
  • Celery
  • Nectarines
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries
  • Lettuce
  • Grapes (imported)
  • Pears
  • Spinach
  • Potatoes
  • Butter
  • Meats

People go organic for a lot of reasons, their health being one of them, but others also consider the environment.  Farmers who are certified Organic growers have more environmentally friendly approaches to maintaining their crops, which in addition to keeping our food pesticide and chemical free also keeps these nasty things out of the environment and sustains our world as we know it, pristine and beautiful.

Another thing to consider when buying Organic are Skin Care Products.  What we put on our skin is immensely important to the state of our health.  Your skin is the largest organ on your body and personally I would have to say that it is more important to consider what we put on our skin than what we put in our mouths.  As our diet can be “detoxified” by the work of our wonderful Livers, our skin doesn’t have this advantage.  Whatever we put on our skin is inadvertently put right into the blood stream without the advantage of a detox or anything of the sort.  It’s no wonder that skin problems are so rampant in our day and age!  I would love to claim that simply putting Organic products on your skin would be the right thing to do, but most skin products that are considered organic still contain chemical and synthetic ingredients.  My best piece of advice would be to either use natural oils as a moisturizer, (Emu Oil is a great all around skin care product), coconut oil, sesame, olive… whatever suits your fancy or consult the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database.  It’s a great website where you can look up different products and get a rating on their toxicity, etc, so you can make a more intelligent educated decision about what you inadvertently ingest through your skin!

Till next time; be well, eat well and live well!
