Making Soup As Medicine

Turns out medicinal soup can be good tasting as well as good for you!  I am missing school again today… thought I’d kicked my little stomach bug over the weekend, but it’s back again.  It might seem like I’m trying to miss as much school as I can right before finals start…. but lets just hope I kick this thing in the next day, or it’s gonna be a tough next two weeks!  At first I thought I was just over-exhausted; which is highly possible and probably the reason that I got this thing in the first place, but I’ve managed to stay right on the cusp of giving fulling in to this fun little virus… let’s hope it stays that way, it doesn’t sound fun otherwise.

As I am sure you really want to hear me rant about my sickness, the real reason for my post is that I just concocted a delicious soup with Chinese and Western herbs to calm my stomach and it’s actually quite delicious as well as easy to get down and keep down.

Here are my ingredients:

  • Chicken Stock
  • Homemade elk sausage, which was harvested with a bow and arrow by my boyfriend:  Just a little for the protein
  • Cauliflower:  Just another cruciferous vegetable & has been shown to reduce the severity of prostate cancers… though this doesn’t help me out much today in terms of the prostate or the cancer, but I figure if it works for that, its got to do something good for my body so why not!
  • Sweet Potato:  Just for some sustenance, plus they have a low glycemic index
  • Chard:  Is packed with Vitamin K, which promotes healthy bone re-mineralization; which from a TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) viewpoint, is directly associated with the Kidney energy and therefore any boost to that system will essentially help kick the body into gear.  From another point of view, promoting bone re-mineralization directly relates to the bone marrow and thus by improving marrow development; immune cell growth and function benefits as well!
  • Mushrooms:  An immune system boosting vegetable in more ways than one!
  • Lot’s of Garlic:  Stimulates the immune function via macrophage & lymphocyte activity.
  • Chunks of Ginger Sheng Jiang:  For nausea and vomiting
  • Elderberry:  For its anti-viral properties and has been researched and proven to be effective in the treatment of the flu virus.
  • Orange Peel Chen Pi: To calm my upset stomach
  • Olive Leaf Extract:  Anti-viral & has been shown to increase the number of white blood cells, macrophages and lymphocytes.
  • Astragalus Huang Qi:  To boost immunity, & build the Wei Qi (basically the chinese way of saying boost immunity), also has some anti-cancer effects and good for general fatigue as well as stress management.

So far so good, it was absolutely delicious and I found all the ingredients at Limbo in the “aisle of herbs” (my favorite!)

Now along with some rest and relaxation, lots of teas and water & some Acupuncture I will (hopefully) be back on my feet in no time!

~till next time, be well~

Erin

“If I Had a Magic Wand… My Wish…”

“… is for everyone to create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity” (Oliver, 2010)

[ted id=765]

Obesity is a growing health problem all over the world, but especially in the United States.  It is truly an epidemic in this day and age.  The amount of people that are considered obese is closing in at around just over 40% and in children, that statistic is reaching about 60%!!    This is a staggering number and the good news is we can do something about it!

This video is about 20 minutes long; I know, who has 20 extra minutes… but I promise once you start watching you won’t want to stop.   Jamie Oliver is an amazing speaker and by the end it will either have you in tears or giving a standing ovation to your computer!  Please watch!

I found this video on Dr. Mercola’s website at the top of an article about getting kids in shape and teaching them about food.  The second week in February Michelle Obama launched “Let’s Move”; a campaign to remedy the childhood obesity epidemic that we are currently dealing with.  Personally I think this is an amazing campaign and it’s what the nation has needed for some time now.  To quote Jamie “if change can be made in this country, beautiful things will happen around the world.  If America does it, I believe people will follow” (Oliver, 2010).  We need to get back to what’s important; our families & our health should be put back on the top of the priority list,  and there’s no better time to start than right now!

~be well & eat well.. till next time~

“So Easy A Caveman Can Do It?”

The theme of the week seems to be cholesterol; good fats and bad fats; eating a healthy diet and living a healthy life-style.  But what does that mean?  It could mean a number of things to different people.  According to the American Heart Association we should decrease the amount of Saturated Fats in our diet, eat whole grains and maintain a low-fat regimen.  Then, there’s the other perspective… decrease grains all together, increase your fat intake (good fats – no trans, hydrogenated etc.) and maintain a moderate protein intake complete with wild-caught fish, grass-fed beef and wild-game.

So which is the “right” one… well, I’ll let you choose for yourself, but hopefully I will get you thinking and give you a little information to do the right thing.

It’s simple, if you didn’t have the daily conveniences of grocery stores, pre-packaged meals, microwaves & refrigerators, what would you eat?  Yes, our world would look a whole lot different than it does today.  Just think how much you rely on the grocery store to supply you with what you assume to be humanely harvested, healthy food choices… yes, ignorance is bliss… but is it?  I’m guessing that if we didn’t have somebody packaging our food up in pretty boxes, claiming “natural”, “heart healthy”, & “fresh”, half of us would starve and the other half would go, well crazy!  If we didn’t have these pretty boxes and shopping carts, we would have to supply for ourselves… just like the hunter, gatherer’s that are our ancestors.  Farming, hunting and seed, fruit and nut gathering were a daily routine to sustain a healthy diet.  There were no trans-fats, hydrogenated oils, highly processed, or super sugary foods in our diets… so whatever happened to these real, whole foods?  Well, it seems to me, we got sugar happy and lazy and with it; we got heart disease and obesity!

I just went to a little seminar with Nora Gedgaudas, author of Primal Body – Primal Mind (Empower Your Total Health the Way Evolution Intended & Didn’t).  She gave a nice presentation on good fats and bad fats in the diet and what nature intended for us and what it didn’t.  She made a good analogy with the following experiment:  “Put a block of butter outside in the yard, next to a tub of margarine and see which gets eaten first”.  She then went on to say how a client of hers went ahead and tried this, and you know what happened, the butter was gone in under an hour and the margarine, remained untouched for somewhere near a month!  Interesting isn’t it, that even scavenging animals that pick at the trash won’t even touch something so overly processed and preserved, yet we lather it on our food everyday by the bucket-load.  Another good point she made was that the rise of Heart Disease almost exactly correlates to the addition and increase of vegetable oils into the diet.  These along with all the hydrogenation, processing and sugar-coating could just be the deadly killers we’ve been trying to ignore all along.

Anyway, the big point here is that our bodies rely on good fats from the diet.  By cutting out fats in the diet and maintaining a low-fat diet regiment, we send a signal to the hypothalamus that tells our bodies we are starving… in turn, the body starts storing fat every chance it gets to survive (it’s an instinctual mechanism).  By increasing the glucose intake (carbohydrates from simple sugars etc.) in the diet we essentially throw more fuel on the fire, propogating more of our calories to be stored as fat in the body.  Cholesterol is a necessary part of our bodies and is essential in neurological processes and all basic cellular function.  The cells in our body are essentially made up of fats, that’s what keeps them together & functioning properly.  In addition a high amount of blood cholesterol, should be used as an indicator that there is something else going on in the body.  Western drugs (statins) are good at removing the cholesterol, and lowering your blood levels on paper, but what does that mean?  Basically, by doing so, you take away the fire-fighters @ the scene of the crime and let the fire run rampant… the downside is, that the fire in this case is silent and will subsequently keep burning until it hits the pilot light and the whole place blows up.

Enter Chinese herbs, Acupuncture, Qi-Gong or some form of Meditation, diet and lifestyle!  All together, these modalities can work wonders and support the natural processes of the body, lower blood pressure, decrease inflammation, decrease body weight and therefore; body mass index.

So, just to add the convenience of this topic, I went on the computer this evening to order myself some more Krill Oil from Dr. Mercola.com and the first article on his home page read:  Saturated Fat is NOT the Cause of Heart Disease… coincidence?  I think not!

I could keep going on and on about the benefits of good fats in the body and why they should be a major part of our diet, but you have to remember that everything in moderation is a key component as well as the way in which foods are harvested and processed (but hopefully not).   Make sure you read the labels, eat as many whole foods as you can; meaning vegetables, fruits and healthy proteins.  No matter what diet you decide to eat, make sure you always buy “wild” salmon & “grass-fed” beef.  Try to eat local and organic, sustainable foods; farmer’s markets are a great source and alternative to store-packaged goods.  For more information on the “Primal Living”, check out Nora’s website and her awesome book:

Since I mentioned it, this brings me to a good point!  I am currently also a trainer/coach at Elite Kettle-Bell Gym in Tigard OR, as well as Spinach in Portland, OR and it has been one of the best things I could have brought into my life.  As you may know I used to be a competitive Freestyle skier back in the day, and love athletic ventures of all kinds.  Kettlebells have definitely made it to the top of my list as far as awesome workouts that get great results without a lot of time and if you are in the Portland/Tigard, OR area, I highly recommend you check it out!  It’s great for all people of ALL athletic abilities, it’s fun and there is always a great group of people with smiling faces around!  The new gym in downtown is amazing, they just opened it up and classes are running Monday through Saturday pretty much all day.  You can check out the schedule on Elite Kettlebell Gym’s website (the link is above) for more information.   Plus it is a great addition to “Primal Living” and any kind of exercise regimen in that case!

Another good source of information on “eating primal” as well as “living primal” is Mark Sisson’s Webpage and Blog:

  • Mark’s Daily Apple – He’s got easy to access information on diet, nutrition exercise and all sorts of primal living details!  Check it out!

Well, that’s enough out of me, I hope you read, listen and link to these sites!

Happy living and be well,

Erin

It’s a BIG weekend!

captured via Creative Commons

So, here I sit, just spent another 10 hours in school knocking down midterms fighting off an inevitable headache, but I’m still at it!  In case you didn’t already know, this weekend is kind of a big deal!  For one it’s Valentine’s Day for all you romantics out there, for another it’s Chinese New Year… which is pretty exciting.  It is the year of the Tiger this year which means the year is sure to be filled with boldness; more on that later.  But, most importantly, starting tonight… it is the start of the Olympic Winter Games!  I can’t believe it is already here!  I have a special place in my heart for games like these, I just LOVE the competition and the awesomeness of it all; athletes uniting an otherwise divided country, the feats of pure strength, heart and athleticism and the fact that these athletes bring such inspiration and hope to us all!  Good luck to all the competitors from all countries… but especially my favorite snowboarder; Graham Watanabe (we’ve pretty much known eachother since before we could stand on two legs, let alone rip down a mountain on a board as fast as you can; a good ol’ hometown Hailey, ID boy)… you rock Grahambo!  Kick butt out there!  You can watch Graham on Monday he’ll be competing in the Men’s Snowboarder Cross!  Also, be sure to check out Women’s and Men’s Freestyle Moguls this weekend (I use to ski with these guys!!  I’m rooting for them all!)  & check out the Aerialists too!  If you didn’t see it already, my buddy Jeret Peterson (also an Idaho native – Boise, ID) otherwise known as Speedy was on The Biggest Loser this week and will be sure to kick some serious butt out there this year! So check out the schedule on NBC.com & see what these guys can do!

Click here:  NBC Olympic Schedule

In the spirit of the Winter Games and since we’re on the topic of Winter sports and more specifically Skiing.  I wanted to also include this article that I just read from Acupuncturetoday.com.

Skiing Injuries and The Power of TCM

The article discusses the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine as a treatment modality for injury prevention and as an essential treatment protocol for skiing injuries and post surgery rehab in high level athletes.   One common injury that many skiers, regardless of their abilities are afflicted with, is an ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) tear; meaning one of the four major ligaments in the knee has been compromised, either partially or completely torn.  In general ski injuries usually involve the knees & possibly back.  If you are familiar with skiing, this shouldn’t surprise you.

TCM and other Chinese Medical modalities have proven to be quite successful in treating post-surgical procedures by reducing recovery time, strengthening tendon and ligaments, reducing inflammation and getting these athletes back on the hill stronger and more healthy than before.  In addition to Acupuncture, herbal remedies, both internal and topical may be used, as well as cupping, gua sha and moxa to increase blood flow, relieve stagnation and inflammation in the area of injury; and improve range of motion and overall joint health to get the athlete back on snow.  It can also be used as a preventative modality with functional training regimens and strength exercise.  In order to prevent injury and illness, you need to build up your body to overcome any adversity that it may be exposed to; the trick is being prepared and correcting your deficiencies & weaknesses before they are exposed!

Now since I brought it up, you will all have to go knock on wood because I’m sure to have just broken a few rules as far as starting my post out wishing Olympic athletes good luck this year and ending it by discussing the treatment protocol for knee injuries!

Toxic babies?!

I just got this email from the President of the Environmental Working Group and wanted to share.  In this day and age, it is almost impossible to avoid environmental toxins; it’s in the air we breathe, the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the water we drink & the house we live in to name a few… you’d pretty much have to live in a bubble to be sure you weren’t being affected by anything; & then you’d probably be worried about plastic off-gassing, BPA and CO2 emissions anyway!  The real, unfortunate thing these days however, is that we can’t even catch a break from the moment we are conceived!  Even in what seems like a very sterile, nourishing & protected environment like the placenta, free from (what we assume) outside contact; we are directly influenced by whatever the mother is exposed to, be it any of the afore-mentioned toxins.   With this in mind, get informed, be smart about your health and the environment you live in.

Here are a few quick tips:

1.  Find healthy, local and/or organic foods

  • Sometimes local is just as important as organic!
  • Learn to sustain yourself; grow a garden (see Tip #4 below), get some chickens & goats, & if you really want to get primal, hunt for your own meat!

2.  Think about getting an air filter/sanitizer *especially if you have asthma &/or allergies*

  • I like to use Dr. Mercola’s Website for a lot of these, mostly because I know he’s done his research on marketing only the best products and it gets a little overwhelming when searching for these things on your own, there are so many products out there all claiming the same thing and it’s nice to know you are getting a good product for your money!  Dr. Mercola.com

3.  Get a water purifier for both your tap (drinking) & shower *your skin is the largest organ on your body and we absorb almost everything through our skin, without the added benefit of detoxing it through out Livers before it’s absorbed straight into our blood*; and if you really want to get into it, look into getting a water ionizer, to both filter and alkalize your water, giving you the benefit of a more hydrating water molecule as well as creating a more alkaline environment inside your body*

4.  If you have a garden, check your soil for heavy metals and previous pesticide/herbicide use.

  • Use oats to check for herbicide/pesiticides:  Clean Air Gardening Blog
  • To test your soil, call your local Health Department and send in a sample.  You should be able to look up areas of concern through the local Health Department as well.  Some areas are more prone to lead or other heavy metal accumulations than others and this is all tracked and recorded.
  • Or you can order soil tests as well to get a whole plethora of information about your soil:  Dr. Good Earth.com

The Environmental Working Group is a great resource as well as Dr. Mercola’s website.   EWG has great info about farming, children, chemicals, water, food and even cosmetics and skin products; they have been very active these days in changing the way our government controls these things in our daily lives!  So finally onto my initial purpose for writing up this blog post… please read below to see their most recent agenda:

Dear Erin,
On Thursday, I testified in a U.S. Senate hearing, and I want to tell you what I told the Senators.  Babies are coming into this world pre-polluted with toxic chemicals.  When EWG tested the umbilical cord blood of 10 Americans, we found nearly 300 chemicals, including BPA, perchlorate, fire retardants, lead, mercury, and PCBs.  The best way to stop this pre-pollution is to enact the Kid-Safe Chemicals Act, which would require that chemicals be proven safe for children before they can be sold.  Click here to sign our petition.

Photo by Colin Maynard on Unsplash

Now is the time for Congress to introduce the Kid-Safe Chemicals Act.  The chemicals are in us. The risk of disease and illness is serious.  The chemicals we found are increasingly linked to serious long-term health effects, from childhood cancer and autism to ADHD, learning deficits, infertility, and heart disease. We need a system for assessing chemicals so our children get the healthy start they deserve. The longer Congress waits, the more babies are exposed.

Sign EWG Action Fund’s petition to Congress
Join the 1000’s of other Americans who are telling Congress it’s time for a real federal toxics law that will make chemicals in consumer products safe for kids.
Click here to add your name to our petition. Congress needs to hear from you right now. We’ve waited long enough.
Thank you for speaking up for a new national chemical policy that places human health front and center — right where it should be.
Sincerely,

Ken Cook, President
Environmental Working Group
and EWG Action Fund

Don’t just take my word for it, be informed about these things, they affect your health and well-being as well as those you love and lets face it, without these essential things, we miss out on living the life we dream of!  Our health is the basic building block of our lives!

~be well~
